Santo André de Teixido Sanctuary
A mystical place of profound popular devotion
Santo André de Teixido sanctuary is undoubtedly one of the most unique and mystical places in Galicia, where devotion, legend and breathtaking natural scenery come together. It is nestled in a small valley in the Serra da Capelada, right above the imposing cliffs of Cabo Ortegal.
Beyond its architectural value, what really defines this place is its surroundings and its deep roots in popular legend. Tradition has it that "a Santo André de Teixido vai de morto quen non foi de vivo" (those who have not gone to Santo André de Teixido in life will go after death), a belief that anyone who does not visit the sanctuary in life will have to do so after death, reincarnated as an insect, a reptile or a soul in torment. This has made the sanctuary the second most important place of pilgrimage in Galicia, surpassed only by Santiago de Compostela.
Those who make the pilgrimage to the sanctuary, upon fulfilling their promise, usually purchase sanandresiños (breadcrumb figures) and sometimes place stones in the amilladoiros as a symbol of a fulfilled promise, a wish or an act of faith. These piles of stones, located in a UNESCO geopark, highlight the cultural and historical connection between the people and the geological environment.
