A Concepción castle
Forged between rocks and the sea
A Concepción castle is an 18th century military fortress strategically located on Punta Sarridal, near the port of Cedeira, on a rocky promontory. Its construction, begun in 1747, was part of a larger defensive system designed to protect the Cedeira and Ferrol estuaries from enemy attacks, especially during the wars with England.
Its interpretation centre immerses us in the defensive history and life of the soldiers who guarded it and offers a key understanding of its historical and strategic context.
Its location makes it a great spot to enjoy a panoramic view of the Cedeira estuary, with the village at our feet, the nearby beaches and the Atlantic Ocean.
In addition to its historical value and impressive views, the castle's construction took advantage of local natural resources for its walls, such as granite rock, proof of the close relationship between humans and the environment. Its location overlooks the Cedeira estuary, an area of great natural value that, recognised as a Marine Reserve of Fishing Interest, exemplifies the sustainable management of marine resources, a pillar of the Geopark.
