The seafaring woman who reigns over rocks folded like paper

On the promenade along the coast of the port of Cedeira, we find ourselves next to the monument to the Fisherman's Wife (A Muller do Pescador) created by sculptor Guillermo Feal in 1985. The rocks on which the sculpture stands and those around it are an outcrop of high-temperature amphibolites, which show tight folds and shear bands (strong ductile deformation).

These rocks folded under colossal pressures during the collision between Gondwana and Laurasia, giving rise to complex structures of progressive deformation and superimposition as Pangea was assembled.
