A contrast of colours swaying in the wind

The Vilariño viewpoint is located at the foot of one of the wind turbines in the Couce do Penido wind farm. From this point, 467 metres above sea level, you can enjoy beautiful views of the Cariño-Ortigueira estuary, from the mouth of the river Mera to its end opposite Cariño. You can also see further east to the tip of Estaca de Bares. The reddish colour of the rocks contrast with the green of the forests and the blue of the sky and, in the distance, the sea.

But the real treasure of this place is beneath our feet. We are on the south-eastern flank of Serra da Capelada, on an outcrop of massive eclogites, characteristic of high-pressure and high-temperature metamorphism, formed at depths of 70 km. These rocks are denser than granite and are very rare on the Earth's surface. But here they have emerged to tell us the remote history of their formation.
