Fraga dos Casás

Ecosystem that preserves the human footprint

The fraga dos Casás is one of the last remaining and most valuable vestiges of Galicia's native Atlantic woodland. It is located next to the river Mera, forming a privileged enclave between the fragas do Eume and the Grañas do Sor.

This woodland stands out due to its lush richness and diversity of trees, creating a unique micro-climate that favours the presence of countless species of birds and fungi and forms an ecosystem of great natural value.

In addition to its ecological importance, this fraga preserves signs of ancient human interaction with the environment. Examples of this are the Cova dos Ourizos, an old chestnut storehouse or ouriceira, and the remains of the old charcoal kiln at Foia do Carbón. It is a highly recommended destination for nature lovers and hikers, with trails that invite you to lose yourself in a landscape that evokes times gone by.
