Castro de Punta dos Prados

The erosion of time

The Castro de Punta dos Prados is an important coastal archaeological site located in Espasante (Ortigueira), although today it is quite deteriorated due to erosion. It is an excellent example of a maritime castro, strategically located on the coastline to defend against sea raids and take advantage of the sea's resources. The settlement, occupied from the 4^th century B.C. and later between the 1^st and 2^nd centuries A.D., was heavily protected by two moats and a double line of walls. As in Sarridal castro, one of the most important and unique finds is a monumento con forno (sauna castrexa) (Megalithic monument used as a sort of prehistoric sauna).
